Kitchens & bathrooms

The two rooms where millimetres matter most. We design the layout, joinery, stone and tile, lighting and plumbing positions, then document them so your cabinetmaker and tiler build exactly what was drawn.

Is it right for you?

Best for

  • Period-home kitchens that need to work for a modern household
  • Small apartment bathrooms and ensuites
  • Laundries, butler’s pantries and mudrooms
  • A kitchen and bathroom done together with one builder

What’s included

Everything drawn, nothing assumed

Each stage ends with something you can hold: a brief, a drawing set, a schedule, a finished room.

  1. 01

    Measure and brief

We measure the room, note where the plumbing, drainage and structure really are, and talk through how you cook, wash and store.

  2. 02

    Layout options

Two or three plan options with the pros and cons of each, including what moving the sink, the toilet or a wall actually costs.

  3. 03

    Joinery design

Elevations and sections for every cabinet: internal fit-out, hardware, panel joins and the shadow-line details that make it look built-in.

  4. 04

    Stone and tile setting-out

Slab layouts with vein direction, tile layouts that avoid slivers at the edges, and niche and grate positions set to the tile grid.

  5. 05

    Lighting and services plan

Task and ambient lighting, power positions inside cabinets, ventilation, underfloor heating and water points, all coordinated.

  6. 06

    Selections and documentation

Tapware, appliances, sanitaryware and finishes, with a drawing set ready for quotes from cabinetmakers, stonemasons and builders.

Typical timeline

How long it takes

Design usually takes six to ten weeks. Expect to be without a working kitchen for about four to eight weeks of the build.

Questions we’re often asked

Can we still have an engineered stone benchtop?

No. Since 1 July 2024, making, supplying, processing and installing engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs has been prohibited across Australia because of the silicosis risk to workers. We specify natural stone, resin-free porcelain or sintered stone, timber, stainless steel or cement-based terrazzo instead. Our journal has a full guide.

Is it worth keeping the existing layout?

Often, yes. Keeping the sink, cooktop and drainage where they are is one of the biggest savings in a kitchen. We’ll show you what a new layout gains and what it costs, so you can decide with real numbers.

Do you recommend cabinetmakers and builders?

We can suggest people we’ve seen do careful work, but you’re always free to use your own. Our drawings are detailed enough that any competent maker can price and build from them.

Can you design it and we manage the build ourselves?

Yes. Design-only is common for kitchens and bathrooms. We can add a few site visits at key moments (set-out, before stone templating, before tiling) to catch problems early.

Consultations

Talk it through first

A 90 minutes consultation is the best first step for kitchens & bathrooms. In your home, at the studio or by video call. Credited to your first stage fee if you go ahead.
